Merry Christmas from the Martin's!

We are in preparations for our great Christmas tour of 2005. Maybe someday we will wise up and stay home, but this year is not one of those years. We are heading to Talahassee for a few days and then to St George Island (Christmas day at the beach... reminds me of all the Santa's in bathing suits cards I've seen over the years) then to LaGrange then to Statesboro. Hopefully the girls will enjoy all this riding, though I doubt we will be that lucky.

Our cell phones are officially ported now, sorry if anyone tried to reach us on Monday and was unable to do so. We have the same numbers, but now you can reach us no matter what state we are in!!

It has been a busy week. Sorry for the lack of updates. This week, I
spent the nights getting our laptop in a state to run linux on it.
Monday night was spent finding a laptop harddrive in our spare
bedroom/computer room. Then I had to copy all the stuff from the
harddrive to our desktop so that if I ever needed something from my
college laptop, which has since broken, I could retrieve it. I think
that was about all that happened on Monday night. Tuesday night was
spent downloading and burning linux cds (Fedora, upon the advice of
Valerie's Tim). I tried installing it and it wouldn't work. Ended up
noticing last night that I had copied the disk image directly to the
cd instead of using the image to burn the cd. Yes, I have installed
linux before and I remember it being easier than this. So, I finally
get the cd burned correctly and go to install it and it gives me a bug
error. Drat... Doh... I downloaded the Ubuntu distribution last night
(another one of Tim's suggestions).

All this week, I have been leaving the house a bit earlier than is
normal for me. I have been getting to work earlier and leaving work
earlier because of this. I have also cut my driving time nearly in
half because of leaving earlier. I think that traffic here is such
that peoples schedules evolve to fit traffic. I learned that leaving
later from home used to get me to work faster. That is no longer the
case. I think everyone else figured that out too. Used to be that if
I tried to get to work before 9, it would take me 45 minutes. So I
left at 9, it took me 15 minutes to get to work and about 30 to get
home. If I did that now, it would take about 45 to get to work and an
hour to get home. I'm good with making my schedule fit the traffic.
I can do it so I will....

This weekend, Jenny is on call. We will also be in the process of
porting our cell phone numbers from Cingular (which we no longer like)
to T-mobile (which we weren't too thrilled about either but gives us
the best plan for the money.) We get nice phones with a rebate to pay
for our turn-on fees. New phones will be nice. Being able to roam
will also be nice. Going to San Jose in January will be a lot nicer
being able to talk to Jenny. Thats all I got for now. I'll try to
post some pictures this weekend!

Saturday, the girls and I went to the Bluffton Christmas parade. That's
right folks, it was a Christmas parade and not a holiday parade. "No elves
were killed in the naming of this parade." Boortz has said this week that
every time someone says Happy Holidays an elf dies!! I'm not sure that the
girls liked it especially but I had fun. Jenny was making visits or she'd
have come with us. After she got home we went to go pick a Christmas tree.
We bought it and then went to Mrs. Harriet's 80th birthday party in Port
Wentworth. Nice party. I think it was a semi-surprise party where people
from all over came. She even had guests from Bluffton!

After the party, we went and cut our tree. We got it home and I hacked off
about one and a half feet off the top. We got a tree that was a little
bigger than our ceiling so that it would be a bit fuller. Unfortunately, I
broke the star. We decorated it with white lights and ornaments given and
collected over the past three years. Its our fourth tree of married life
and it's the girls first tree. Interestingly enough, when we hold them up
to the tree, its usually the tree that interests them and not the ornaments.
That is good and bad. We got a western red cedar which is extremely
prickly. I had red prick marks all around my wrists after setting the tree
and stand inside. Hopefully the girls will learn quickly not to play with
the tree. Originally, Jenny was concerned about them getting into things
and bringing the tree down on top of them. But, it is big enough and they
are light enough where they could probably climb it before it would fall on
them!

We went to Beaufort last night to celebrate Koutsunis' birthday... He's an
old man now. We got a grand tour of their new place. The Jenny's had a
mini pampered chef party in the kitchen. KP and I discussed astrophysics
and how it pertained to the age of the universe while the women cooked
dinner. His newest studies are that of creation vs. evolution. We also
discussed work, which is a definite must when guys are together, even if
it's just a "eh, its work" comment.

It's raining today. Has been for as long as I remember being awake this
morning.

It's seemed like a pretty regular length week this week. At the same time,
I have a hard time believing it's Thursday. Jenny's on call again this
weekend. We have dinner plans with the Richardson's and lunch plans with
the Warfield's.

This is Kate and "Pappy". Kate is learning the fine art of channel surfing... or how to watch golf. This is a picture from October's visit to Tallahassee compare it to the recent picture of us at the park and you can see that the girls don't grow that fast.

So, I thought that I would recap our Thanksgiving day holiday. It takes me so little time to do this and yet I always take so long to write about things. We visited my family in Statesboro on Thanksgiving day. We had a grand feast. We had turkey (of course), cranberries, dressing, Senator Russell's potatoes (as I was told by my grandmother is the way you say it, evidently in GA you shouldn't even have to say that they are sweet), green beans, and even squash, despite the great squash shortage of 2005. In case you didn't know, there was a squash shortage in the Coastal Empire for Thanksgiving. We spent the day doing Thanksgiving-ish things. Rudy and Nevi went out in the "back 40" with the whole family to frollic in the empty cow field. It seems strange not to have cows back there after there have been cows back there for so long now. We put up the fence when I was 14 or 15 so you can do the math. We have had cows back there for a while. Caroline and I set up her new glass bead studio and she got to mess around Thursday night. I did a little messing around of my own... wasted glass sounds funny...

Friday, we headed to LaGrange to let Great-Grandy see the little people and vice versa. On the way there, we passed the Outback blimp. It took us a bit but we did indeed pass it. I know it made an appearance at the GA Tech vs. Rednecks game but I'm not sure if it stopped somewhere first.... where do you park a blimp after all.

We hung out with Grandy and ate another slimmed-down Thanksgiving meal. I'm "thankful" it was slimmed down. Get it... We did a lot of talking and visiting to make up for lost time.

Saturday, before we headed back Emma got some Grandy time. Amazingly enough, she snuggled with Grandy. She doesn't typically snuggle with anyone so maybe she knew it was her great grandmother holding her. Either that or we really wore her out with our busy week.

Kate had to be put down before she fell asleep. Neither of them will typically fall asleep without their room and cribs. I love holidays!!
